Reading this. It's a lot of fun, if you're into swearing, insults, and literary history

Just to borrow, if you register, it seems. I still strongly prefer physical books, so I scoured the (non-Amazon) online shops

One of the things I love about the IA: I can grab something to check a reference without delay or to see if it's worth buying a physical copy.
My writing group was discussing Frak and sanitized swearing in SFF last night, and this looked useful.

Makes sense. I figured I was on safe ground with this one, having liked Montagu's book about skin and the importance of touch.
SFF swears are a topic we've been meaning to cover on the Strong Language blog. Hopefully one day.

Montagu's book devotes one long chapter to the peculiar history of the word "bloody", which, he writes, "accumulated so much magic that it provided an unfailing source of energy for use in all sorts of refined meanings."

Why we swear like a trooper, trucker, sailor, fishwife
I updated my @stronglang.bsky.social post with notes from Ashley Montagu's 1967 book The Anatomy of Swearing:

Where is “trooper” favored? Do I only know “sailor”, because of living on the coasts?
