The countries we demonize and point to as 'We don't want to be that!' varies; Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, etc. were real popular during the Bush Jr. years. Japan hasn't gotten that much because they smacked us, got war crimed, and then sat down and capitulated while they continued their development.

In other words, they're "like us". South Korea has a similar overall perception. In the case of China, the negative propaganda has been heavy because they're a major rival with economic policies that ultimately are against our ruling class's preferences. This is endemic to our education.

These are two examples that don’t represent a whole. When the president shouts and people cheer what nation(s) does he bring up? China because it’s a sentiment as a whole but the opposing also responds with worry of becoming like China/Russia as a Whole.
