I worked for the YCC (Youth Conservation Corps) for one summer in HS, our teams had a different job every week-from painting park restrooms, clearing brush, building trout dams, etc. We were immersed in the Gila National Forest. I developed a love of nature, and now volunteer at a local arboretum.

I've been saying this for 40 years. Outward Bound was required by my quaker based high school. It changed our lives by teaching us teamwork, equality, focus, and facing our fears. The attitude and discipline are excellent job training, and the societal benefits would be immeasurable.

It would ultimately depend on a few factors for me.
1. What are the roles they would be drafted into?
2. Would the individual get a choice of which role to pick from a list of roles?
3. Would the individual be paid for their services>

On paper, it sounds like a really good idea.

Exactly, if something like this is to work there needs to be very clear rules and structure in place. Ideally, it should be structured in a way that inspires a sense of community regardless of an Individual's origins. Class,Race,Gender, etc etc.

As a part of high school I had to do 120 hours of public service (everyone did). While I had many skills that would have saved them a lot of money, everyone assumed it was from a court sentence. I ended up taking the "new book" stickers off books at a library for most of it. That's all.
