Is it normal to be cringe-ing at one's own text at this stage? I think I used to feel more confident about my writing in the past and often read proofs thinking they were ok (even with the difficult second album book)...whereas now I am full of doubt all of a sudden.

I think it’s very normal, I have to force myself to do them. Better now than once it’s in print! Looking forward to the book…

My experience is that I either hate my text at copy-editing stage and then think it's reasonable when re-read in proofs, or vice versa. (unsurprisingly, I prefer the former).

Hard same! I don't know where this sudden cringe-y feeling has crept in. Hopefully it will get better towards the end (am now half-way through the proofs, and have thankfully detected a few decent sentences as well).

Ok, have now read the whole thing and while my eyes did not bleed during all of it, I did detect a slightly pathetic ending (or is ’full of pathos’ better?). Anyway it’s all soon out of my hands….
