Galileo conflicted with the Catholic Church, particularly Pope Urban VIII after publishing his "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" which defended heliocentrism (Earth revolves around Sun), & was found "vehemently suspect of heresy" & sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life.
Wasn't the main reason he was suspected of heresy only partly because of the heliocentrism thing and more because he called the pope a "fucking idiot"? Right in the middle of the 30 years war as well.
Well at least house arrest ment he was living out his days on his own wine chateau with his own personal cook and servs. All paid by his employer the Vatican. History is always good for some irony and humour.
Yes, although he was mostly paid by the Grand Duke of Tuscany rather than the Vatican, although he did also receive a variety of incomes from the Church through his life.
Truth be told Galileo really was a troll to nearly that level. In one of his tracts on heliocentrism he all but called Pope Urban VIII an idiot. It was this, not actually his insistence on heliocentric theory, that he was forced to recant and for which he was punished.
The Church's real beef with heliocentrism was over more subtle issues in the philosophy of science. Is the earth actually moving around the sun, or is considering it that way just a more useful way of looking at things? The latter was how all Catholic astronomers managed for centuries later.
The humor of this comic is dampened by the fact that Galileo's conflict was chiefly with pope urban the second who we know, from papal state records, had a massive hog.
