someone said to me that they “can’t live without ChatGPT” summarizing their papers for them and I wanted to reply with thenperish.jpeg bc holy shit this same kid wants to be a doctor like bro learn to read!!!

This wasn’t a case of a person having a tough time focusing on the text (I have that too) it was them refusing to actually understand it on their own 😭
I think like every tool, it needs to be used ethically and correctly. I think students using ChatGPT to help them with their studies such as finding research, helping calculations, give clarification. But writing papers, finding answers is not really a good way to use it. At least in my opinion
No, AI won't make you lose your job, but it can make someone incompetent to do a job, like a doctor, engineer, etc... it's a tool, but definitely not something we can rely on
Lol, I used it today to write website content for our partner program. Made literally 5 changes and posted it. You think that makes me incompetent? I thought it was genius finding something else to do with the two hours I saved...
No that's not what I'm saying at all. People who rely on it too much without doing the additional work needed for it (such as skimming for errors, making changes, etc...) that is what fails. Let's not purposely twist words now
As someone who learned english as second language, abstracts are filled with jargons. That’s also smth that I have wondered about a lot. Like most academic stuffs use really complex sentence structure and uncommon vocabs. So, it’s not just about reading. It’s about comprehension and clarity.
That’s what I used to do before Chat GPT too. It just takes twice long for me to do things than native speakers would 😒. You can’t trust chat GPT or any AI 100% but boy does it save time. But then again why can’t research paper be written with plain old simple words or sentence structures??????
No they absolutely can be written in simpler structures. I think any paper published in any language should have more simplicity, but it's one method to keep lower educated people uneducated. My papers that I submit don't use complex structures, and I still get A's. It's just the snobs 😭
oh definitely 💯 Academics stemmed from old classist elitist system. It used to be nobles or rich ppl or privileged ppl in those fields (not like it changed much). And, only those kind of ppl can be in academic field too due to little financial rewards they give in that field. Not all, but…..
You know that bro reads the outputs right? You can skim read the paper description to confirm mistakes (which if you're copypasting it rarely does on 4o)
Then as long as the writer performs the tasks themselves it's incredibly useful for searching references.
i have a screen reader read through the whole paper for me. You can do something in the background if it's not too important; play video games and have it read through a few times. Or you can listen and read to better hammer in the information. I recommend this rather than relying on summaries
It depends on my time restraints and focus, usually I only need a few pieces of information for the type of essays I do... I wouldn't do it for less statistical/experimental papers
I have used GPT4o in this way to cut through to the essential questions I have for a research reference, and to do so to many dozens of references within very short time.
It means I can spend more time evaluating, arguing/explaining, and thinking up perspectives. There are ethical uses for this.
If a single reference is being focused on for the majority of an essay, then I would recommend doing this, and also reading the entire paper. But in every other instance, this has doubled my reference count and my capacity for analysis.
This person was not being that thorough unfortunately. And while I’m sure ChatGPT has its uses in processing large amounts of info I cannot advocate using it here in place of honing a very necessary skill especially in exchange for the amount of resources one prompt consumes
Like man I wanna be sympathetic bc school is hard! It’s stressful! And you gotta BS your way through a lot of it! But there are things you absolutely can not skimp on and this is one of them
I get being smart about approaching your workloads and lightening them, but I truly think chatgpt and its proxies will decimate any individual thought in young people's heads, alongside with older people. I have so many people at work tell me they use chatgpt for the most inane shit
It's so scary to me that people are using it so routinely, both because of how inaccurate it's information is and because it's just so dang energy intensive. Every single prompt is contributing significantly to energy and water costs
I wasn’t aware of the energy costs associated with AI. A short cursory review of a google search shows it’s very energy intensive, including the use of water which didn’t even make sense to me at first. I will do more digging but thanks for this comment.
FWIW, the data center growth is also driving huge solar growth. Microsoft (for example) would love to be able to advertise that their data center is solar-powered. So it is double-edged.
I guess...but that doesn't address the water consumption issues really. I'm glad that they're thinking about conservation in some way, but I think we all just need to be more thoughtful about when we use these tools
Thank you for looking into it! Please spread the word. Most people I speak to had no idea. AI can be powerful, but we need to be careful and restrict our use to things that can't be done any other way, or the other way would take significantly longer to the point that energy costs would be similar

Ah shit, lost another patient...
if they say "nah" then the brain rot is terminal
