I am an infectious disease nurse who specializes in Tuberculosis.BCG vaccine does not protect against Active infectious TB. It is given to children in other countries to protect against Meningeal TB that kills children fast. BCG is used in USA to fight bladder cancer. It doesn’t stop infectious TB.
I don't think so. I live in the area and this outbreak has been ongoing since 2023 and the numbers stay relatively low. Most of not all are as a result of working/living in close quarters and having someone come into the group with it. The county health is on it. Small outbreaks in KS happen
This is what’s irritating me. The world is on fire for real but every third post on Bluesky is “worst historical outbreak of tb in Kansas” and no one is reading the whole story. Ugh. We’ve got to focus to be more effective!! Bird flu info blackouts are the true danger!
I thought the US WAS vaccinated against TB; is this a new thing? I mean, are younger generations not required to have had the vaccine? I thought it was required to enter school and such. Am I mistaken?
Not a new thing. The BCG vaccine against mycobacterium tuberculosis has never been offered routinely in the US. The reasons are not nefarious. Because the incidence of TB has historically been low in the US, our public health system opted for a “screen and treat” approach instead. Hope that helps
I don’t think it’s routine in the community anymore. If you’re in healthcare you have to get a quantiferon Gold test for TB. Less frequently tho not sure of exact schedule
