The AfD wanted and expected better results than this. They must have. This is not a euphoric, cathartic breakthrough, welcoming in a new dawn of ultra-racist chaos. The thing about exit polls is that you can’t fake your reaction to them and my initial reaction was “phew, I’ll take that”.

They are the strongest growing party.
German politics works in such a way that they are indeed not now in power.
But this is a huge win for them, nearly putting them in the same position as Le Pen's in France.
This is like the last presidential elections where she made it to the second turn and American commentators were like "haha 41% she got STOMPED" when the fact she was even in the 2nd round again & improved her score was terrifying
The German situation will not be precisely like that but it is getting very close.
But even if a GroKo becomes mathematically possible: AfD will be the only opposition to the right of Union, putting pressure on them to stear clearly enough to the right - while SPD just had their worst performance ever.
