the fact that wa state is fine with raising public funds through a lottery (functionally one of the most successful regressive taxes ever designed) but won’t even consider an income tax make me want to scream and then punch someone and then cry

like yes we can have good faith discussions about spending priorities but a government functioning properly and responsibly is providing non-rivalrous public goods like parks and utilities and public health and education and safety and one’s taking in those goods doesn’t diminish their availability
so the gvmt provides these things that otherwise would only be available through for-profit means, which is less efficient for the consumer despite what the ads would tell you. what’s so amazing about the specific recalcitrance on progressive taxation is that it’s not just bad econ it’s bad history
this and other countries have had periods of economic growth with higher overall tax rates and greater public spending. it may be true that some of the huge tech companies in wa relocate some and the gains from such a tax would be more modest than projected. i do understand. and you know what?
