And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, that number almost certainly implies at least 4-5X as many highly contagious but less sick cases walking around in the community, spreading the virus everywhere. The only real defense is herd immunity. Without that, poof! Everybody has it!

The child could have been saved even after contracting the disease if the parents and their doctor acted quickly. This is because the vaccine may also protect against measles if given within a couple of days after exposure.
