Circumstances of late review code and my enthusiasm met in this case. But they def paid me after that. When I was editing the mag for a handful of months, freelance budget was around $3k per issue, if memory serves, at roughly $100 per page.

Yep, features were a good negotiation. Even sweeter if they came off the back of an overseas junket. But the true treasure trove was contributing to guide specials!
Writing for a magazine was all I wanted to do when I was growing up, then the HSC happened and I thought I just wasn't good enough for it so I never bothered looking into it.
Still, I think I have something in me worth a bit of money, I just need to sort a couple of things out before I go for it.
Until a couple months ago I was writing for Stack magazine, the one you get in JB Hi-fi stores. It was basically just ads, since you can't say anything negative about products. I was getting $165 a page, which does not feel like much today
That's still kinda cool though. $165 isn't a lot, but in saying that, $165 is more than the grand total of what I've made in the last 16 years of writing haha
