This is the reason housing is a commodity and politicians will not effectively confront homelessness, bc capital needs that cudgel in its war against worker empowerment
I used to work for one of the largest homebuilders in North America and they were faking scarcity while selling all of the homes in bulk to shell companies.
I worked recently on a federal housing project and every obvious solution has to get shot down because “public housing lobbyists won’t like it”. Everything sucks because of rich people hoarding everything.
Essentially it boils down to “they don’t have to offer public housing at all and if we inconvenience them in any way (I.e. make things better for residents) they will stop offering anything”
