This is something Microsoft acknowledged a few weeks back, that the guidance isn't great on those packages and what is, or is not, supported under LTS given those are versioned and supported outside of the LTD flows.

We're hoping the guidance will be clearer in the next month or so.

For now, you should be able to use the 9.0 extensions and diagnostics packages for .NET 8 applications, but if you've updated to .NET 9 already you should be good.

Probably similar, but honestly it's not a *technical* issue imho: different packages referencing different v8/v9 core packages works very well, since they all ref upgrade to the same, higher version.
It's a problem of company policies when they want only-LTS stuff: legit, but problematic.

Luckily we don’t have any limitation to stick with LTS - hence we resolved the issue with full upgrade of everything.

Thing is, I never seen a solution in such state that several (!!!) deps would cause “downgrade” error.

Technically it should (tm) work, until it doesn’t 🫣

I remember that issue arose with Serilog, OpenTelemetry and few Microsoft Extensions packages, blending different versions together wit direct references from solution projects. Deps graph was just maze 😅

Never before I have seen such dependency "breakdown" in .NET. What went wrong with net8.0 and net9.0 and nuget ecosystem? 😭

Pace of change has increased. .NET used to move slower than other frameworks, so package management felt easier because we had less versions to manage.
