As strange as it sounds, this might be a blessing in disguise. Since jet fuel is stored in the bottom of the plane, landing upside-down means that if the landing gear failed, the bottom wouldn't spark upon touching the ground, leading to much more catastrophic damage.
At this point, these airplane accidents are no coincidence! Something is definitely happening, and these fascist shitheads are at fault! People are dying because of them! I don't know about you, but other countries started revolutions for a lot less than this!
It's more like the system has been operating at the edge of disaster for a while, meaning that as soon as any changes were made, lots of stuff went wrong all at once.
(My perspective: my mom's house was nearly taken out by a crashing passenger jet when I was little; we had engine bits in the yard.)
That used to be... not common, exactly, it's just that "shocked but not surprised" applies perfectly. People had been warning about exactly what happened happening sometime soon, complete with draft regulations to prevent it sitting in a filing cabinet at the FAA. They were deployed shortly after.
It was a whole big thing, the FAA already knew how to prevent it but it was this crash that made them actually do what was necessary. My dad has custody of me for the holiday so I missed it.
I'm sure a huge part of it is the cutbacks and threats since Trump took office, but I think there are a couple other factors at play. The first is regulation cuts, profit maximization, and monopolization, and the second is that the media is focusing more on plane crashes because it's "in" right now.
Basically, the same neoliberalism that led to this fascist regime also has led to the degradation and neglect of a lot of our infrastructure, air travel included.
Associated Press says this happened in Canada, everyone lived, and this was weather related. Honestly that is the best outcome for this tragedy, and I'm sad that I have to even say that.
