I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine flying right now. I’m not sure if it’s an option but if you have a show/movie/playlist/book that is your happy place, it could help to prep it before the flight. For me it’s bob’s burgers downloaded on a device ahead of time and on a loop.
I highly highly recommend the r/fearofflying subreddit! It has really helped calm my nerves, especially seeing responses from pilots and people actually working in the field. Flying is still the most safe form of transportation and the news is making things seems wayyy worse by over reporting 😔💕
Small non commercial planes crash WAY more commonly than commercial- there has only been
ONE commercial plane crash in the US in the last 16 years and that was the DC one. The news is pulling literally every scary event they can and running the stories because people are scared and so that’s more $$
The one today while scary was in Toronto so technically international BUT everyone is alive! There are only I think 3 (or at most 8) reported injuries at all! So like scary things CAN happen but everything be okay. There are something like 45,000 flights a day and that’s SO many that go as planned
I would be lying if I said I was not also a lot more scared so you are totally valid!! But thinking about how rare it is that ANY bad thing happens with commercial US flights (especially compared to driving!!) helps weigh against the like really panicked fearful thoughts I do have ❤️
Oh gosh I didn't know about that subreddit but it sounds amazing. I'll definitely be checking it out to help calm my nerves beforehand.
And I know the logic doesn't necessarily add up, but even before we were seeing news I couldn't help but imagine the terror of going down in a plane every time 😭
Genuinely same, I was already generally scared of it and everything has not helped LOL. And it’s especially hard with like OCD tendencies or intrusive thoughts. Reading through the various threads of people’s successes and also talking about their fears on that subreddit has definitely helped me!
Every time I get on a flight all I can think about is contingency plans for my cats so that our friends have access to our apartment while we're gone and can make sure they're safe if anything horrible happens to us and I hate needing to feel like this.
