The first piece I heard by Thomas was “Of Our New Day Begun”. It was written to honor the lives of 9 people that were lost in an act of domestic terrorism at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2015.

Many of the themes and elements in this piece pays tribute to Black American Church tradition, such as stomping, clapping, blues harmonies, and the melody from “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

Another piece I would like to share is “A Mother of A Revolution”. It was written in celebration of trans women, especially Marsha P. Johnson. She was on the frontlines of the Stonewall riots; she is an incredibly important and admirable figure in the LGBTQ+ community.
