The most convincing good-faith cases for it I’ve heard revolve around accelerating discovery in materials science and/or biology to enable step changes in things like catalysis and biomanufacturing that would outpace the carbon cost of AI. It may be possible (I hope it is!) but it’s optimistic.

Isn’t “AI for ” vague generally? I find it to be so betraying to people who have been talking about tackling before AI became tech-bro fantasy. Including scientists and universities who champion AI for health, transport, climate or anything else.
