I have always wondered why, when fossil fuel companies throw a pittance of $$ investment into clean stuff, they always choose offshore rather than onshore wind. I think part of it is because its physical isolation allows for full ownership and control. No human society they need to be part of....

As an NGO person I used to find big mining companies slightly more open and less dogmatic than Big Oil.

Mines usually have access roads which communities can easily block, so the companies can't ignore society entirely.

Oilfields? Strategic assets = barbed wire, guns. And offshore if possible.

Or because offshore wind occupies empty space, has uninterrupted wind, uses much larger turbines (economies of scale) and its doesn't affect human populations. It's the same reason why North Sea oil was possible for the UK and onshore proved intolerable. But with far less damage.

A fun example related to this is our local friendly state-owned fossil fuel company promising CCS at this gas processing site for yonks, realising how expensive it is, and now turning to wind / electrification instead.
