You’ll always be on the other side of that threshold until you try the wine that Maynard infused with bacon, from the vineyard he named after a pube wig
They really are the heirs to Rush in that their best defense is “the drummer is incredible”, but otoh Peart pretty much disavowed his infamous libertarianism, whereas Maynard is still at it and still dead serious about being joylessly satirical
I fully acknowledge that Tool is a band with many insufferable fans, composed entirely of Weird Guys, led by one of the Weirdest Guys, but Lateralus is still one of my favorite albums ever.
I went to one of their shows as a kid and a guy next to me had to get carried out by his buddies mid-set because he had gotten fucked up and kept collapsing
I was referencing this song, but like, a tool show is intense stone cold sober so I can't imagine standing in front of a 150' video screen showing psychedelia on a heroic dose of psychedelics. I would definitely also collapse.
They're good! The last two albums are less interesting, but Opiate to Lateralus are worth a look. Their songs get longer as the albums progress, so bear that in mind.
Personally, I think Opiate isn't very good, and multiple members of the band have expressed the same sentiment. I think 10,000 days has some incredible songs, as does Fear Innoculum, though the latter is my least favorite besides Opiate.
I like it as a starting point. "7empest" is the best part of Fear Innoculum. I can't get into 10k Days, they peaked at Lateralus for me even if it has good ideas on it. It's not bad just nothing hooked me.
