I know that there are parts of the country where it is hard to keep bugs out of the house but I think Airbnb hosts that say “we live in X and its natural for bugs to show up in the house” are very suspect

We stopped staying in AirBNBs after we stayed in one in Amarillo in 2019 where it was absolutely freezing when the ceiling fan was on, but the ceiling fan was the only thing keeping the swarms of flies away from the bed. We decided to be hotel people after that.
I have bugs (crickets mostly) in my garage. Sometimes ants in the summer. And rarely a wolf spider. I guess it’s because I keep my windows open in the summer. Far fewer bugs in the late fall – early spring. I wonder if single story houses get more bugs? My house was built 80 years ago.
Yeah. In Texas there are giant tree roaches that enter through vents and attic gables. You have to screen off every little opening to keep them out, but it is possible.
Owning a home, I have bugs in it. It’s pretty natural especially in basements or ground levels. They can come in through window seals/ AC units or on stuff you bring in the home. Now I must admit like I’ll see one bug on my ground level in like a week, anything more than that…
Is a bit much. If I had an excessive amount of bugs, I’d be checking to see where they’re coming in and reinforcing any seals. There are also sprays people can use but they can be harsh chemicals.
I will also say I’m talking harmless bugs, not like beg bugs because ew
Only one we stayed at was lovely EXCEPT the ladybug infeststion. Our dog enjoyed trying to clean them up. The host offered to come vacuum them up when I mentioned it during the stay.
i know in my very insect-prone area it’s usually because they hire someone to spray pesticides to kill/deter bugs daily or weekly so it’s kind of a lose-lose situation either way
They do, look between the mattress and box spring, under the bed, under the a/c, under the bathroom sinks, behind the dressers. All the places you wouldn’t clean if you made $8 an hour and were undocumented.
Saw a story of someone who once stayed in the same building as they lived before, left after opening a cabinet and it was a cockroach rave inside, and the owner tried to put it as "it's to be expected, it's an old building", and got strangely aggro to the point they got banned from the platform.

It happens and it's not always a hygiene or maintenance issue.
stay in a chicago airbnb above the 12th floor and they're like "we replaced the door to the balcony with a beaded curtain"
