Can't just drag and drop the file, you get a link disguised as a file. Can't fool me. Download pdf. Now there's a copy in that download folder. No, the other download folder.

Now you can drag it into OneNote but only the desktop version. What's a desktop version?

You see, OneNote started as a desktop app and still has roots there even though Microsoft would prefer you don't notice this since it's been trying to make it purely cloud-based since like 2013 but has to maintain the legacy system due to entrenched corporate user workflows.

This corporate admin resistance to change is good for us as it means we still get to "own" our OneNote files by using the legacy backup function which creates real files on your PC.

So you can drop files in pages and treat it as sort of a data repository you actually control.

MSoft would rather you never use desktop onenote and instead use the "universal version" and instead put that file into OneDrive and link to it there. You know Onedrive. It's those files that are and aren't local?

OneNote can't even maintain links WITHIN OneNote and they are nudging this. LOL

So I can laugh at the kids with their entire digital life in the google/facebook/apple cloud who don't know what a file extension is. But then I'd have to explain what actually happened here with this file maneuver like it's so special to understand something so arbitrarily arcane.
