one of many reasons i dont really post. i dont like how that rabbit hole makes me feel about social media and myself and instead of grappling with it 300 characters at a time i simply abdicate my relationship with social media more broadly

I think about this and reflect on what I've witnessed, learned myself. There is one mentor in particular to whom I want to attribute what my own 'brand' is.

At the same I detest that I am branding myself, but on the other I relish in making this branding which is unique, whimsical, standing out

I damn this platform for running out of space for words but my attempt to distill the brand is being memorable standout. The mentor has red hair and beard, dyed maybe so he is memorable at the conventions.

people remember me in my tacky jacket and hairdo and all, when I'm hosting events in my hometown and elsewhere that they recognize its me, the dude with the palm tree or disco ball coat jacket.

Yeah I'm not wearing the tacky stuff daily, only for special events. But that's my brand I've built.

We have been rather wondering about that ourselves, and I think the answer to the paradox is reasonably obvious: there's nothing wrong per se with having a "personal brand" as a marketing entity, as long as it's kept at some distance. Using a public persona would be like having one's own mascot.

and of course this reflects in metrics that are omnipresent. even if i don't think i have a brand, other people think i do (or expect X of me); i have no real way to opt out of this. like i can see a post that i'd consider trite popping off. my notifications are currently unusable because of it

you would think i experience some sort of joy, or appreciation for a post taking off--but i don't particularly. it all sort of washes over me (in no small part because it's a reflection of what we've optimized for in a bad way: short, concise, not especially challenging or nuanced stuff.)
