Just once in my life I would love to go to the bouldering gym and not feel like I’m being watched by guys who want to show they can flash every problem I’m working on

If possible (and I know it's February) boulder outdoors. Arseholes will tend to stay inside, where there are greater opportunities for them to flex to their besties.
I've never felt like an idiot for working on a route for hours in top rope, vs bouldering which feels like it's got a much more elitist gym-ratty culture.
absolutely, top rope and lead are soooo much better, I really prefer them both for the culture and for the sport itself (I like the longer problems). but unfortunately lead gyms are thin on the ground where I live!
They just want a chance to be a hero, if the popular theory of the day is to be believed.
* hero to them is all about them. no, you know, selfless sacrifice.
* talk to the gym about times that might be less... bro. my workout gym gave me times that are more... elderly and less grunting. good luck.
This is a very persistent, global dynamic btw. Just watched a talented female climber get chased off the project she was working by a pair of dudes in rental shoes determined to Jacob’s Ladder it
