This is imo why Tumblr and Reddit (which have their own issues) have been resistant to the worst of the Twitter era social media rot. Tumblr is follow/subscribe but is ruled by self-organizing fandoms, and Reddit has subreddits

the issue is the follow/subscribe to an account instead of joining a digital bar, so much shit flows from that design decision
