It actually doesn't have to take that long. Look at Spain. It was an actual Fascist dictatorship for almost 40 years. Only regained democracy 50 years ago. Made enormous leaps in under 10 years, and has now one of the most progressive legislations in the World.

I can’t get out f my sadness today. The realization of the cruelty that is about to be imposed on fellow human beings is very very hard to watch, listen to. Through tears I ask God to help us all. If anyone thinks that this won’t be painful then you lack empathy and I ask God to help you.
