In the introduction, we argue that the crisis of representation proclaimed by many political scientists is not *replicated* in how citizens in democracies evaluate their relationship with politicians. Trust in politicians & perceptions of promissory representation are not in general decline. 1/17

From our perspective, our inability to map up our with citizens' assessments of representation suggests that we may miss certain aspects of representation (e.g. crisis literature focuses a lot on substantive dimension). In section 2, we present 3 different "ontologies of representation", i.e. theories about the nature & social reality of representation, that are commonly advocated. We argue that traditional, "realist" understanding in which representation is given, emerges from voting & is formal is limiting. 4/17

Instead, we argue for an "interactive-constructivist" ontology in which representation is constituted through communicative acts (claim-making by politicians & citizens' reactions) & institutions are neither necessary nor sufficient for representation but provide a background for the practice. 5/17
