Even more than a decade after coming out myself, this hits hard. I love my parents and am so thankful for the love of learning my dad instilled into me. But reconciling that with the staunch conservatism and their support of people who want me to not survive is devastating.

/hugs I know that had to be so emotionally scarring for you. I didn't have smart/calm parents:they were fundie/conservative & I knew up-front how they considered me. I still bear my scars from it & blocked them from my life. People can be smart, but not wise; intelligent but not empathetic. 1/

I hope other parents see this and realize what they could be doing to their kids. I even hope your dad could see this and realize he was wrong. Maybe it's too late for that; but, maybe, just maybe, he could heal himself. 2/2

I do truly appreciate his commitment to education. I have a soft spot for his style of humor, which influenced my own. I appreciate how he had this VHS-C camera that he would let me use, sparking my love for movies and starting me on a path that led to me going to film school.

You need to consider how you communicate with your child, and how communication doesn’t just mean the words that you use.

You’re telling your kids something with the foods you eat, the activities you engage in, etc…

…you communicate to your children with the media you consume.

The rhetoric against the trans community wasn’t as much in the spotlight when I was growing up, but every time my dad turned on the radio, he’d have my sister and I listen to the likes of Rush Limbaugh, or Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, etc… One of the topics that’d come up frequently was queer people.

The “gays” were an issue. More than an issue, they were a *problem*. If someone was queer, these radio hosts were quick to villainize; “this teacher is going to turn their students gay,” “this troop leader is going to abuse his scouts,” you don’t want *your* kid to end up like that, do you?”

When I was ten years old, my father told me that if I was gay I should walk out the front door.

He doesn’t remember saying that now that I’m in my thirties.

I’m not gay. I think I’m on the ace spectrum. Regardless that’s a fucked in thing to say to your child.
