You've reminded me of how much of a pain it was to get a specific font displaying in the same way in PDF files for publication images and on Shiny apps.

Thanks heaps for your work in improving this. Does this update mean it's time for me to revisit curved text?

It certainly makes it easier to lay out text along paths. There is already an extension that provides this (based on textshaping) so I don't know if there is needs for revisiting anything

One thing the new update makes possible is to implement deformation of the glyphs as it wraps around a curve by extracting the glyph as a polygon. However, I don't think this is a huge need

Oh, I feel bad for raising that issue on GH. But I super appreciate all the work that went into fixing the rtl text flow! 🔥🔥

Not at all. It was wrong before and needed fixing - I was just oblivious to it as I don't use rtl scripts in my daily use.

The resulting rewrite improved maintainability quite a bit as well and makes me less anxious to tackle vertical scripts in the future

Other large quality-of-life improvements are build-in support for web fonts and a better way to work with fonts that aren't installed on the system.

Put `require_font()` in your script and it will fetch and load it if it isn't already available
