That wouldn’t be difficult to achieve. Just make it illegal for water companies to pay dividends to shareholders or bonuses to directors if they breach any regulation in a given year. The shares would be almost worthless in no time.

One of the concepts arising out of the Occupy Movement was the concept of creeping nationalisation. Each year the environmental regs. would become more stringent. The fine would be in the form of shares. And NO new shares could be issued! Eventually state control at no cost.

Some of them are already worthless, on the verge of bankruptcy as they've extracted every last possible penny for nonuses. We'll soon get them for free, but unfortunately then we'll pick up the 15 billion in repairs and investment that needs doing.

You can nationalise any badly performing company at virtually no cost. Remove subsides and when they go bankrupt just swoop in on assets at bankruptcy auction. Cheaper than nationalisation

Then the shareholders got rich and the problem taken from them to us. The money would still need to be found (bills would still rise). The shareholders include pension funds, so there would be a hit there too. The solution is to maintain dividends while fixing the problem with higher bills

It is stupid to privatise something that is in fact a monopoly, such as the electricity network or water services. It would be madness to build several power lines or water pipes next to each other, so there would be no real competition. That's why they have to be owned by the public sector.

The Tories see deregulation as a universal solution yet they have to appoint a regulator for every market they privatise. They do, however, believe in one monopoly: their own refusal to understand and correct the consequences of their catastrophic policies.
