Oh, how interesting 🤔 I noticed over the years that Kansai-ben being mentioned a lot in anime as a sort of dialect not common (or at least represented) and when translated over to english dub it's associated with a southern accept but i never knew where it came from and didn't question it much

thank you for this! i've seen a lot of discourse on wolfwood's accent over my time in this fandom equating kansai-ben with southern because that's how it's usually localized for an american audience

i never had the knowledge or eloquence to feel comfy talking about the topic tho lol

Thank you for reading! Yeahhh, the Kansai = southern thing is actually pretty contentious in translation/localization circles despite how popular it is… I won’t say they dialects are never used in the same way, but ime the most common stereotypes and associations are not equivalent

I think the Overhaul translation contributed to the idea that he was 100% meant to be southern… I’m not opposed to it but I wish more people were aware that it was a decision made by the translators, and not the original author’s Word of God

although overhaul is a great contribution to the fandom, theres definitely some inaccuracies and unfortunately it's been paraded around as The Better Version in all accounts by both themselves and the fandom as a whole

but they arent professsional localizers by any means

I read this a while ago and as someone that’s lived in different regions of the U.S., I feel like it’s similar to “y’all” vs “you guys” or “turn loose” vs “let go” or calling that thing you push at the store “buggy” vs “shopping cart.” Those happen to be southern dialect terms, but there’s others.

I mean, those are examples of dialectical differences, but what this person was trying to say is that there’s no american dialect that’s an exact equivalent to any japanese dialect, and vice-versa. They each have their own unique cultural contexts in their respective countries

Not to say that it’s wrong in every instance (and Wolfwood might be one of the most appropriate case since Trigun is an english-speaking western-inspired setting), but as a status quo, I think it’s worth reconsidering

Me too! Sadly this post doesn’t go into the origins, but the world of animanga translation used to be so tiny that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a decision one person made on a whim and it became the unquestioned norm
