We aimed to tackle an open problem in cognitive neuroscience by looking at systems neuro. Can communication subspaces between large-scale cognitive networks enable content-specific routing of activity across the brain (e.g. prioritised access of salient stimuli to frontoparietal cortex)?

A simple idea emerged about how the frontoparietal network (FPN) may switch its coupling between the default mode network (DMN) and dorsal attention network (DAN), explaining the anticorrelation between these networks and how our brain may switch between internal & external attention

We propose that the DMN and DAN may each have within-network connectivity that is a little too weak to maintain a high-activity attractor state. However, if they recruit part of the FPN into their network they can maintain a distributed attractor state (with fixed or chaotic activity).

Why can't you typically have DMN, FPN and DAN activity all together? Because the combination of the DMN-FPN and FPN-DAN attractors is not itself an attractor of the system. The FPN can only maintain one of the two activity patterns at any time.

This is the fruit of an intense 3-year collaboration with @ulisespereirao.bsky.social (who is the real driving force). It was guided thoughtfully by Xiao-Jing Wang. It has been a wonderful experience to think through problems with and learn from Ulises and XJ.
