Sad I don't remember this mascot.
Alligators with their mouth closed (and a normal regular dentition pattern) show only top teeth pointed down with their mouth closed as they have a massive overbite, making this most likely a crocodile (or possibly a caiman) due to alternating up/down visible teeth

Based on pronunciation alone of the word caiman (sounds posh) I would kind of expect it, I imagine 'gators in general are a lot more uncouth redneck than the refined dapper gentleman shown here
