I feel like their looks has something to do with it definitely, some colorful, simple, silly looking characters. I've never been much into mascot horror myself, the only one I've liked so far has been Indigo Park and it's because I love the look of the characters, specially Rambley lol

i think there's also like "the world is full of actual real man-made horrors that I am exposed to regularly" and so there's something cute and quaint and camp about fictional man made horrors

I think for me, growing up in prime time fnaf craze phase, it was almost this taboo that we could touch into, secretly play this dark horror game that our parents waved off because it has "cute" characters. Like seeking into a horror movie or R rated movie at the theatres

Yeah the movie and security breach play into this, there’s also a lot of ghosts of troubled/neglected/abused/bullied children and some kids I think either like it as a story with sympathetic grey area characters or they feel attached to them themselves
