Using an “anchor test” planned missingness EMA design, we asked 102 depressed adults to rate feelings of loneliness and other psychological experiences 5x/day for 14 days. Twelve (12) items were used to assess loneliness, and multi-item measures of other constructs (e.g., depression) were also used.

We used multi-level CFA to look at the factor structure of these 12 loneliness items and assessed the reliability and validity of the measure. We also compared the multi-item measure to a single-item indicator that is most commonly used in EMA research and clinical applications.

What did we find? Using a multi-item measure of loneliness was feasible in EMA, had strong inter-item and rank order reliability, and correlated (mostly) with what we expected: momentary depression, satisfaction with one’s interactions, and (less so) with solitude and social interaction quantity.

We also found that using a single item to measure loneliness was adequate. Construct validity correlations were attenuated relative to the full measure, but not by much. In settings where brevity is the priority (e.g., ongoing clinical assessment), single-item measures of loneliness aren’t so bad.

This was a super fun project. We used data from my dissertation, collected with my EMA software @inclivio.com. And, best of all, I got to collaborate with two insanely smart psychologists: Max Halvorson (who shared the first-author role with me) and Kevin Hallgren.

Evidence is mounting that loneliness is (causally) associated with negative mental and physical health outcomes. It is also becoming more common, and affecting younger generations. As clinicians, we know that loneliness is like throwing gas on an already lit fire.
