Got around to playing StarCraft II's Wings of Liberty campaign after dipping my toes into the RTS genre over the past year and I'm like... upset with the ending, but in a good way?

I don't know how relevant Tychus was in the previous game, but following his character through the campaign I became invested *just* enough (something I find difficult with how modern games write their characters) to really feel a sting when Jim used the last bullet in his revolver to take him out.
It was a character death that I think was executed well enough but without knowing any context other than Wings of Liberty... did Tychus have to die? Was this something set up in advance in the first game or did the writers not know what to do with him?
His story in SC2 starting with his "freedom" granted after suffering imprisonment because of Jim, and what he thought might be his true freedom being taken away also because of Jim? That's awesome. But we already got the Ex Machina made up of Macguffins... It kind of sours things a little.
Was there REALLY no way Tychus could continue being a part of the story? Would it actually have been distasteful for there to be a way to strip the armor off so he isn't bound by Mengsk? Is it just a Cayde-6 where the writers kill someone off just so we finally feel something?
Also, why the hell do I care about Kerrigan becoming human, and how is it supposed to make sense? The campaign ends with a cutscene of Jim carrying her in his arms, and nothing about the freedom fighters finally taking out Mengsk? It's prolly in the next campaign but I'm not giving Blizz that money.
