Sadly, my layout has been “disassembled” over the past year. The benchwork remains, but the track and scenery have all been packed away.

I don’t spend a lot of time with it anymore and many of the trains I have now are DCC equipped. But I still have many warm memories of my little railroad 🚂

While the scenery and rolling stock on these layouts are outdated by today’s standards, they were still labors of love that their makers poured their hearts and souls into, and it’s that amateur passion project that still makes them charming to me.

Often times, I’ve heard the excuse that model railroading is too expensive of a hobby to get into. While I am not denying that, especially nowadays with tariffs, model railroading is a hobby that can be as expensive as you want it to be.

Want to build a large layout with advanced scenery, a fleet of DCC engines with sound, AND a complex signal block system? Go right ahead!

That said, you can also get the same level of enjoyment with old secondhand rolling stock, plasticville building kits, and some e-z track

Bottom line: if you want to try model railroading but higher end options are out of your budget range, there’s nothing wrong with compromising with cheaper options! There’s still a ton of enjoyment to be had from simpler layouts like the ones that train YouTubers had back in the site’s early days!

When it comes to model railroading, accuracy is the thief of joy. Perfectly scale is a standard someone can chase forever but will never attain. A layout is an artistic expression. Build what you want, make mistakes, change things. Don’t ever let the rivet counter mindset get in the way of your fun.
