A well place adverb is a joy to read. It’s the ‘ly’ at the end that tingles throughout the body.
And really, if you ever have been on the receiving end of “longingly looks into her eyes…” you know it’s vastly different to “gazes”.

Also Elmore Leonard’s advice as he preferred a strong verb in noir to adverbs. I’m with them except for the beautiful piece by Aldous Huxley “Lightly”
