And oh gosh - my youngest starts reception in September and I was hoping it would be a moment of small reprieve, although I already dropped the in-house role for freelance as it was impossible even with one in school.

I think it's very individual - school definitely brings good changes too! For me it was the childcare situation around school that I never could quite get right, but that's not a universal problem.

Yes it’s been an issue for me too. Both mine have severe allergies which means afterschool club won’t take them until older. Now my oldest is older, she doesn’t want to go!

This article perpetuates this myth that before having a baby the couple has an income competition. Whoever "loses" becomes a lower priority and has to sacrifice more. It doesn't have to be this way.

True, but the common thread in that article was that now those women make less so they have to watch a sick child or do other childcare tasks during their work day. Why couldn't the male partner do those things equally just because he makes more?

I agree with you! But in practice, it's such a common dynamic here and seems so hard to break out of. I wonder how much of it stems from the way our parental leave is set up & used, which often establishes the woman as default parent.
