Chattel slavery ended in the U.S. because of war. It would have lasted into the 20th century were it not for the civil war which ended on April 9, 1865.

It unfortunately still is legal, as long as it is a punishment for a crime, per the 13th amendment. And people wonder why we have the highest incarceration rate per capita in the entire world…
It is hard to know for sure how long it would have lasted, but the USA didn't fight the war to end slavery, we fought it because the confederates attacked federal forts and arsenals. Using the war to end slavery was secondary, and the best thing to do.
It’s correct that the Lincoln administration, and many Americans, fought to reunify the country on the grounds that secession was treasonous and the attack on Fort Sumter sedition.
Don’t forget though that, at the same time, many thousands fought and died to end slavery plain and simple.
Ex-slaves were forced back onto plantations after the war. But, convict labor was and is considered Constitutional. Don't be surprised if prisoners are used to make up for labor shortages. Imo, however, it must be remembered that slavery is not an institution because of law, and that can change.
Anything I say is my observation. I’m not a researcher.
People were found to be enslaved on tobacco ranches in North Carolina in 2010. Prisoners, 32% of whom are black, work for $2 an hour which is confiscated for their room & board. Slavery is, unfortunately, alive & well & making a US comeback.
I wish we could end slavery in the US altogether. The ridiculous loophole in the 13th amendment that allows for enslavement of prisoners is an abdication or moral responsibility.
We went from slavery to Jim Crow. In 1964, the Civil Rights bill was passed, which caused a lot of angst among racists.
Then started the anti-CRT Movement. Next was anti-DEI. These racists won’t stop until we’re back to 1776, where only wealthy, white, male landowners had any rights.
Truth. No longer kidnapping people and working them to death for generations. Just keeping the working class destitute, reversing financial safeguards, to enslave the 99% and delude us (via 1% owned media) that we are not slaves.
Leading to Civil Rights 100 years later because pre-maga confederates couldn't call a black man equal.
Even when it was his half brother.
Now we've changed from good billionaires to evil billionaires who have been robbing our IRAs for the last 10 weeks.

Totally normal Thursday now…🤦🏻♂️
Will it take another civil war to put an end to this?

I hate it here.
