I don't exactly have a super strong basis to know what I'm about to suggest is possible, but the idea of titans being largely mindless creatures of darkness powered by dark fountains, and darkness allowing for fantasy to come to life, makes me think that the knight is experiencing the same thing. - ThreadSky

So basically my thought here is... The knight has a dark fountain inside. Going into even further speculation, trying to go by similar things that Ralsei has told us, it might just be that someone can become like a fantasy (more specifically a Nightmare) if they themselves have enough "darkness".

So I guess in this theory Dess would be experiencing a nightmare induced by a dark fountain, turning her into the knight, drawing out the "darkness" within her and using her will (since she is a lightner) to act.

If I'm anywhere close to being right about any of this it's probably at least somewhat off so if anyone has thoughts to add onto this or work off of the concept i'd love that.

Something I just realized: The Knight encounter is the only boss fight in UTDR (as far as I can remember) where a party member does all the monologuing while the actual boss stays completely silent, only attacking. This kinda furthers the Chara parallels since in geno you only attack and don't talk.

The knight attacks Tenna with a red attack that oneshots him and deals absurd amounts of damage, this reminisces of the geno route where you slash a boss once and they take a bajillion damage and die. Furthermore the screen turns black with Tenna's sprite becoming pure white, not too dissimilar to

how 99% of undertale fights are a mostly black screen (+ some UI) with a predominantly white colored sprite for the monster you're fighting. I swear an absurd amount of stuff about this knight is just a throwback to geno, gaster even calls to us out of the "black wind" of geno.
