Of all the US Rubyists I am subscribed to or just checked their profiles recently (on Twitter, BlueSky, and Mastodon), exactly ONE person (thank you!) wrote something about Trump/Vance betraying Ukraine on live TV.

Dang. I haven't seen any, period, though I've been avoiding the Ruby/Rails stuff for quite some time due to DHH BS. I've been super conflicted about using Rails for so long and seeing the public face of it get worse and worse.
I'm still a bit flabbergasted to have seen dhh support Trump. Also makes me a bit ashamed to use the framework he's such a vocal part of. It's impressive what money does to you.
I want to say that I haven't been motivated to do that, because I think the reasoning is a bit nonsensical, but I am literally learning Phoenix and Ash at the moment though...
Some of us are calling our representatives and donating to primary the russian sympathizers in our government. Silence on social media doesn't mean we aren't doing anything.
At this point, silence on social media (and no, not even silence, "regular daily posts as usual" in most cases) looks extremely concerning to me.
Words matter. Visibility matters.
I don't know how it happens that everybody from all over the world has something to say... Other than US tech people.
Thanks for continuing to post. It helps me to ground my view of the world to what a real, living breathing person is experiencing. It's easy when you're an ocean away to take a "theoretical"/naive view of what's happening. Your posts help dispel that for me.
I've seen that before.
From Russians.
Who might say to you in private that they "don't support any of this shit," but "you should understand" that they should keep it to them in public/online, because, "you understand..."
I do not anymore, because I refuse to.
My social feed for the last few days is:
* Ukrainians: this and that were bombed, this cause needs money urgently, that politician is an idiot.
* Most others: We stand with Ukraine; Trump is a criminal.
* US Rubyists: CFP is closing! The new post is published! Look at this cool coding trick!
I really dont even know how to keep posting like usual. I watched a lot of the history channel with my grandfather growing up. I feel like I'm watching the Nazi rise to power all over again.
I've been writing in support of Ukraine for a long time. Not to say that you're wrong, you're absolutely right, but you might do well to expand your Rubyist following.
There are a lot of us out there who stand with Ukraine but aren't huge accounts.
I can tell you that every friend and family member I have brought this up in person to person interactions since it happened and the universal response is how shitty it is.
I would only add that this administration is doing so many terrible things on so many fronts that it's impossible to post about it all without turning your account into 100% politics. Most of us have to somehow still work and function. I try to be generous with people...
If they have posted at least some lament on some aspect of what is going on, then I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt on any one particular issue.
A lot of us are feeling crushed under the weight of being erased and the return segregation by race, gender, and ability.
I saw posts from US writers, actors, politicians (the sensible ones), and many other people.
I saw posts from Rubyists from Europe, the UK, Japan, and Australia.
But not the US ones.
(Might've missed somebody, obviously.)
Nothing interesting happened, right? Right?
(Well, other than your country publicly aligning with the Axis on the onset of WWIII, but I know, I know, you have more interesting topics those days!)
I have almost entirely shifted my social output to private fora. Friends and I are more ashamed of our country than we have ever been before. My monthly contributions to Nova Ukraine continue.

Remember at least half these Americans voted for this. Anyone acting surprised is either faking it or a complete idiot.

I mean, my bar is already so fucken low for Americans in tech being on the right side of anything for going on a decade so
It is absolutely a betrayal.
And a massive embarrassment.

Not a big loss for the community, anyway.
