I've used found screws and bolts as pendulum weights and a gifted broken car aerial as a divining rod/wand.

Exactly this. And in my personal opinion Pratchett was a true mystic, whether he realised it or not. If magick is just words then someone who can command them so masterfully that it helps millions of readers see the world through shimmered eyes just has to be.
