For Bannon I think it is because he wants the satisfaction as being remembered for destroying America. It is an accomplishment for him.

Trump is doing it for self enrichment and the long lie he has always believed, because he has never been treated well in his life, destroying American is a right.

All of the above, but the number one priority for Trump is removing the guardrails against corruption. He's planning to plunder the government, and he doesn't even need a hotel in DC to do it anymore. He's going to pull funding from lots of federal agencies. Where do you think it's going to go?

It is baffling. And it doesn't seem to make sense for them to destroy a system that largely already benefits them (rich, male, straight white business class). So why do it, then? There are a few other reasons to do it that I can think of, right off the top of my head:

The point is to create chaos. Chaos breeds fear. Fear is the lifeblood of authoritarian regimes. People want stability/predictability more than anything else. If they have to turn to a big, strong daddy to get it, so be it. Now, authoritarians need targets for fear & eventually they’ll get to “you.”
