I'm not sure that I entirely agree. I agree that it's not a particular ideology or far left, but I think it is at least leftish. Our society is moderately authoritarian and moderate authoritarianism leans towards fascism rather than liberty. So for most people their default isn't anti-fash.

Fascism is a clique. That's all it ever was, and this idea that it is highly militarized nationalism is a conflation. Fascism is just as natural a human impulse as xenophobia, and comes from the same place, sociologically.

Still, this modern iteration is a danger to many and must be combatted.

Liberals can’t be anti fascist because the facilitate its existence. I despise the left/right dichotomy for obvious reasons but I think it’s fair to say only a “leftist” can be truly anti fascists

The problem is when fascist gain control. By their nature they are insular and anyone not in their hegemony is an enemy. When a group like that gains power others invariably suffer. There will always be such groups convinced of their own righteousness.

e.g. Catholic Church is historically fascist
