Thanks for the bluntness. I wasn’t sure if my distaste was just a sign of advancing age. It started with hating siri. Talking to a thing weirded me out. I go cold at the thought of people interacting with a silicon chip. What is the point if we have so little agency in shaping reality for ourselves?

Do you mean specifically LLMs? Like my friend has her PhD in atmospheric science and their research in creating ML models could help save lives by more accurately predicting how large masses of air behave during extreme weather patterns (i.e. climate change). No hate, like fuck LLMs, but AI≠LLMs

AI saved my life. I was dying last summer on a neuro floor with no dx. I "had a dialog" about my symptoms / Chat. I'm a scientist/researcher with access to all the journals, but that doesn't help if you don't have a place to start. AI gave me a place to start, and its dx was ultimately correct.

I wasn't talking about genai. Whatever you call the technology that searched across 1000's of medical journals, from fields I'd never heard of, or pulled from already-existing searches similar to mine, and presented the output so I could find more specific research, definitely saved my life.

GenAI needs to be fired into the sun. But, I just yesterday saw that there's an app for gamers to help scientists train an AI to identify species deep undersea, in an area that is vulnerable to exploitation. It *can* be used for good.
