A few years ago I worked at an explicitly evangelical Christian workplace and I attended a guest speaker event to see what people were like there. The presentation was about shifting theology away from God the son to God the father to prepare for necessary tough love.

I lived across from a church when I moved here and during covid I thought it'd be neat to see one of their sermons, they're right across the street after all. I turned it on and the preacher was just rambling about how Jesus was warning us against socialism.

I grew up borderline fundie, so I know a lot of Bible verses. The contortions these positions require are appalling. Literally one of the earliest lessons you learn in Sunday school is the Good Samaritan.

A book claiming that we’re being manipulated by people wanting us to feel empathy for the world we live in lauded by a group of people that want to control us using fear, hate, and violence. Empathy is what can tear those down. No wonder they don’t want us to feel it.
