Nintendo's wasn't really an option. The Nintendo BRAND was a juggernaut and Nintendo gamers were pretty much all-in (multi-console ownership was sort of a foreign idea)

Well, Sony saw an important vulnerability in SEGA's market.
Sega had tried and failed to push consoles beyond the Genesis (like SEGA CD). They just weren't great at hardware, which is why they eventually abandoned it and became a software company.
So Sony swooped right in, essentially highjacking their vibe, and stole their market.
So, anyway, in this analogy, SEGA is Steve Bannon
Master System was great!
