YA Lit - The Great Cool Ranch Dorito in the Sky by Josh Galarza — don’t let the silly title fool you! This is a powerful story about grief, loss, & feeling comfortable in your skin as a high schooler. I especially love that this it deals with body dysmorphia from an adolescent boy’s perspective.

Translated Lit - The Book Censor’s Library by Bothayna Al-Essa — this is a book that meets at the intersection of Fahrenheit 451 & Alice in Wonderland. Al-Essa is a Kuwaiti author that has written a propulsive novel that would be even funnier if it weren’t so prescient.

Poetry - […] by Fady Joudah — can’t recommend this enough. Read every Palestinian poet you can. This collection is heartbreaking, but also so necessary.

Nonfiction - Unshrinking: How to Face Fatphobia by Kate Manne — All 5 of these finalists are incredible and worth your while, but Kate Manne has been an auto-buy for me for years now and I’d love to see her win. Read anything and everything she’s written. It’ll be well worth your while!

Fiction - Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar — it’s down to this one and James by Percival Everett. Both were among the best I’ve read all year. And both are deserving. Martyr! gets my pick because it’s the one I’m most excited to re-read.

It was another great season of reading and being introduced to new authors and diverse perspectives, which is truly my favorite part of National Book season.
