Measles is extremely infectious. In a susceptible population, a single measles case can produce nearly 20 secondary cases. The virus is transmitted by aerosols that linger for hours after an infected person coughs/sneezes. (2/11)

Nathan Lo and Peter Hoetz estimated that a decrease of 5% in MMR coverage in the US produce a 3-fold increase in measles cases for children aged 2 to 11 years every year, which would cost an additional $2.1 million. This assumes that cases remain relatively rare. Costs explode when measles becomes truly epidemic. A 2018 outbreak of 77 cases in Clark County, WA cost $3.4M. That was just 72 cases. Imagine if it were 100s or 1000s. (6/11) https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2020-027037

The case fatality ratio is often dismissed by anti-vaxers as being very low, at around 1/1000 in the US. In endemic regions in Africa, the CFR is closer to 1/20.
