We used to keep a shelf of lonely bananas but we had to get rid of any that had the tiniest bit of brown on them.

If you want to speed up ripening at home give them a quick wash, they're treated with a liquid that slows down ripening during transit. It eventually evaporates off but that takes a day or so.
